Group Support

FAMEkids is a free, ten week after-school program for children ages 7-12 including a nutritious meal. Small group sizes allow participants to explore and share their experiences in a peer-supported environment, reinforcing the knowledge that they are not alone.

The program incorporates daily activities focused on identifying and expressing feelings, self-awareness through mindfulness approaches, and the following weekly topics:

Week 1: Welcome & Introduction to Mental Illness
Week 2: Relationships between Thoughts, Feelings & Behaviours
Week 3: How the Brain Works
Week 4: Types of Mental Illness, Possible Causes & Diagnosis
Week 5: Symptoms and Treatment Options
Week 6: Protective Factors, Risk Factors & Coping Strategies
Week 7: Feeling Safe & Keeping Safe
Week 8: Working Through Fears
Week 9: Personal Safe Spaces
Week 10: Planning for the Future

After the completion of the FAMEkids group, a follow-up session will be conducted with each child and their caregivers. The purpose of the session is to provide feedback regarding the child’s participation in the group, to answer any questions, to allow the opportunity for the child to share their knowledge and experiences, and to provide recommendations.
